The costly transfer saga ends as Dembele thrives at PSG while Barcelona looks to the future.
Barcelona has officially concluded payments for the transfer of French winger Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, despite Dembele having joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) more than a year ago. The Blaugrana had rushed to sign Dembele in 2017 for an initial fee of €105 million after Neymar’s record-breaking €222 million move to PSG. However, new reports from SportBild reveal that Barcelona ultimately paid €148 million for the player, completing the final installment just this year.
The Dembele transfer has been widely regarded as one of the most challenging in Barcelona’s history. While the winger occasionally displayed flashes of brilliance at Camp Nou, his tenure was marred by frequent injuries and inconsistent form. Dembele managed to score 40 goals and provide 43 assists in 185 appearances, but at nearly €1 million per game, his contributions were deemed costly.
In 2023, Dembele forced his way out of Barcelona, joining PSG to reunite with close friend Kylian Mbappe. Barcelona recouped just €50 million from the sale—a fraction of the total sum paid for him. Ironically, Dembele later played a pivotal role in PSG’s 6-4 Champions League victory over Barcelona in April 2024, scoring twice and providing an assist.
Despite the financial burden of Dembele’s transfer, his departure has given Barcelona a silver lining. The exit allowed 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal to step into the first team, where he has flourished, providing hope for Barcelona’s future.
Dembele’s stint at PSG has seen similar ups and downs, as he continues to struggle with finishing and decision-making, traits that frustrated fans at Barcelona. Nevertheless, Barcelona’s long journey with the French winger appears to have reached a costly yet definitive conclusion.
