Barcelona Lower-League Derby Abandoned After Barrier Collapse Injures Fans (video)

Intense rivalry marred by safety concerns and crowd incidents

A highly charged derby between fourth-tier Barcelona sides Club Esportiu Europa and Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu was cut short on Sunday after a barrier collapse injured fans. The incident occurred 47 minutes into the match at Nou Sardenya stadium, with the visitors leading 5-3.

Sant Andreu’s Marc Jurado had just rounded the goalkeeper to score when the barrier separating the away fans from the pitch gave way during the celebration. A surge of supporters tumbled forward, creating a chaotic scene. Players from both teams, along with Sant Andreu director Taito Suzuki, rushed to assist, helping pull fans from the crush.

Fortunately, most supporters escaped unharmed, though one individual required medical attention for minor injuries. Despite the quick response, the referee decided to abandon the match after consulting with club officials and local police, who could not guarantee the safety of attendees. The game will be rescheduled, potentially behind closed doors.

Referee’s Report Highlights Safety Concerns

In the official report, the referee detailed the incident:

“In the 47th minute, after UE Sant Andreu scored a goal, the visiting players went to celebrate with their fans. As a result, the metal fence that marks the edge of the pitch collapsed, and around a hundred fans fell out. Medical assistance and stadium security acted quickly to rescue the affected people.

“The damaged fence occupied part of the playing field. After meeting with security coordinators and officials, it was determined that the safety of fans and participants could not be guaranteed, and the match was suspended by mutual agreement.”

Heated Atmosphere Escalates

The derby had already been tense, with Europa captain Jordi Cano targeted by away fans who threw objects at him after he equalized to make it 2-2 earlier in the match. Following the game’s suspension, Sant Andreu supporters required a police escort to leave the stadium, as frustrated Europa fans attempted to confront them.

This isn’t the first time safety concerns have overshadowed the Pla de Barcelona derby. Four years ago, a similar barrier collapse occurred at Nou Sardenya, prompting repairs approved by local authorities. Sunday’s incident has reignited debates over crowd control and infrastructure at lower-league football venues.

The rivalry, known for its intensity despite the teams’ lower-league status, continues to be one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in Catalan football.
