After a long-awaited and delayed homecoming, a sold-out crowd witnessed a dominant performance and a clean sheet in the renovated stadium.
Barcelona celebrated a long-awaited and emotional return to their iconic Camp Nou stadium on Saturday, marking the occasion with a commanding 4-0 victory over Athletic Club. The win, which propelled Hansi Flick’s side level with Real Madrid at the top of the league table, was the perfect gift for the 45,000 fans who finally witnessed the team’s homecoming after more than a year of construction delays and setbacks.
The party atmosphere was palpable, with fireworks lighting up the sky before and after the match. Despite exorbitant ticket prices, the match was virtually sold out, with fans filling the three stands currently open. The club hopes to gradually increase capacity, aiming for a full 105,000 seats by next season.
The fans, who had waited much longer than anticipated for this moment, didn’t have to wait long for a goal to celebrate. Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, wearing the captain’s armband, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a powerful low strike. Ferran Torres would later net a brace, with Fermin Lopez also getting on the scoresheet in a comprehensive team performance.
The victory was made even sweeter by the return of goalkeeper Joan Garcia from a nine-game injury absence, helping the team secure its first clean sheet since September. The match also saw a poignant tribute to the past, as fans spontaneously sang the name of club legend Lionel Messi in the 10th minute, honoring the team’s glittering history even as they embark on a new era.
“The connection with the fans was felt from the first minute,” said midfielder Fermin Lopez. “To play again in our home, with our people, and to win like this… it’s a very special day for everyone.”
For manager Hansi Flick, the result and the return to Camp Nou mark a significant step forward. “The energy from the stands was incredible,” he noted. “It gives the players an extra push. This is a day to enjoy, but also a foundation to build on.”
