Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly eye 17-year-old prodigy as potential Barca sale looms
Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles have sparked rumors of a potential high-profile sale of rising star Lamine Yamal, with Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly interested. Despite having a €1 billion release clause, Yamal, 17, could be considered for transfer, according to Miguel Delaney of The Independent. The move comes as Barcelona’s debt remains unresolved, even amid talks of a significant sponsorship deal with Nike.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta previously stated he had rejected a €250 million offer for Yamal, emphasizing the club’s commitment to its young talent. However, Delaney’s report suggests the Catalan club’s financial hurdles might leave them with no choice but to consider selling Yamal and other young stars like Pedri and Gavi.
Speaking previously on the Spanish show El Hormiguero, Yamal expressed his desire to stay: “I hope I never leave Barca. I hope to be a legend at Barcelona.” He acknowledged that comparisons to Lionel Messi, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, drive him to be his best, though he aims to establish his own legacy.
Delaney’s report follows the recent decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to block Barcelona’s attempt to apply their 2022 domestic TV rights sale toward meeting Financial Fair Play (FFP) requirements. As a result, Barcelona’s rivals may now have renewed hopes of securing a bid for Yamal, despite Laporta’s resistance to a sale.
A move for Yamal remains unlikely before next July, when he turns 18, yet Arsenal and Liverpool’s interest highlights the potential implications of Barcelona’s financial crisis for the La Liga powerhouse.
