Barcelona’s Homecoming Delayed: Getafe Clash Moved to Johan Cruyff Stadium

Club officially confirms another match will be played at its smaller ground as it awaits final permits to reopen the renovated Camp Nou.

Barcelona fans will have to wait a little longer for a grand return to their iconic home. The club has officially confirmed that its upcoming La Liga match against Getafe on Sunday, September 21st, will be held at the 6,000-seat Estadi Johan Cruyff, the home of its reserve team.

This marks the second time this season the first team will play at the smaller venue, as the club continues to navigate the final administrative hurdles to reopen the newly renovated Spotify Camp Nou.

In a statement, the club expressed gratitude to its supporters, saying, “FC Barcelona thanks its members and fans for their understanding and support during such a complex and exciting process as the return to the new Spotify Camp Nou.”

While progress is being made, with the crucial Final Works Certificate already secured, the club is still awaiting the First Occupancy Licence from the Barcelona City Council. The hope is that these final permits will be granted in time for a potential grand reopening against Real Sociedad on September 28th.

However, even if Camp Nou opens later this month, it is unlikely to be ready in time for the team’s first UEFA Champions League home game against Paris Saint-Germain. That high-profile European night is expected to be held at the Olympic Stadium on Montjuïc, extending the team’s period away from its legendary home.
