Experienced German international joins champions on free transfer after decade with Bayer Leverkusen
Munich, Germany – Bayern Munich confirmed the signing of German defender Jonathan Tah on Thursday, securing the center-back on a free transfer from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen. The 28-year-old, who spent the last 10 years at Leverkusen, has signed a long-term deal with the Bavarian giants, keeping him at the club until 2029.
Tah’s move to Bayern had been widely speculated in recent weeks, with reports of his medical and visit to the club’s headquarters surfacing on Wednesday. The transfer marks a new chapter for the Hamburg-born defender, who expressed his excitement in Bayern’s official announcement.
“I’m very happy to be at FC Bayern,” Tah said. “I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”
Having begun his career at Hamburger SV, Tah broke into the first team before making the switch to Leverkusen in 2015. Over nine seasons with Bayer, he became a defensive mainstay, making 402 appearances and establishing himself as a reliable presence at the back. His performances also earned him a call-up to the German national team in 2016, where he has since earned 35 caps.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen welcomed Tah’s arrival, highlighting his leadership and winning mentality. “We’re delighted to welcome Jonathan Tah to FC Bayern,” Dreesen said. “As an experienced international and leader, he brings the consistency and quality that will strengthen our defense. He’s a real gain for us—and he’s also proven that he can win titles.”
The signing reinforces Bayern’s backline as they prepare for another competitive season, with Tah expected to slot in alongside the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano. His arrival on a free transfer represents a shrewd piece of business for the German champions, adding both depth and experience to their squad.
For Tah, the move offers a chance to compete for major honors at one of Europe’s elite clubs—a fitting next step in the career of one of Germany’s most dependable defenders.
