The defender is set for a free transfer after a dramatic deadline day U-turn, with European giants now lining up for his signature.
In a major development, Bayern Munich have opened talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi on a free transfer next summer, setting the stage for a fierce battle with Europe’s elite for the England international.
According to Florian Plettenberg, the German giants have already initiated negotiations with Guéhi’s representatives. Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, is a known admirer and is keen to secure what would be a major coup on a Bosman transfer. However, to facilitate the move, the club would likely need to sell one of their current central defenders, Dayot Upamecano or Min-jae Kim.
This news comes on the heels of a dramatic and frustrating summer for Guéhi. The 23-year-old was on the verge of a €40 million move to Liverpool, with a deal fully agreed, a medical completed, and even a farewell video for Palace fans recorded. However, in a stunning last-minute reversal, Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the transfer, reportedly after manager Oliver Glasner threatened to resign.
The Guardian reports that Guehi was left “furious and bitterly disappointed” by the collapse. With his contract expiring and no intention to sign a new one, a January sale is possible to ensure Palace receive a fee. However, a high-stakes free transfer at the end of the season now appears the most likely outcome.
Having established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders and a key figure for England, Guehi’s availability has put top clubs on high alert. With Bayern now formally in the race alongside longstanding admirers like Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, the battle for his signature is officially heating up.
