Bayern Munich Lead Race for Nico Williams With €60m Clause Set to Be Triggered

Spanish winger’s wage demands prove too steep for Arsenal and Chelsea as German giants push for deal

Bayern Munich have emerged as clear frontrunners to sign Athletic Bilbao sensation Nico Williams this summer, with the Bundesliga powerhouse prepared to activate his €60 million release clause – a move that would effectively end Arsenal and Chelsea’s pursuit of the electric winger.

According to Sky Sport Germany, Bayern have already held productive talks with Williams’ representatives, with the 22-year-old reportedly “very open” to swapping La Liga for the Allianz Arena. The deal would see the Spanish international become one of Bayern’s highest earners at approximately €20 million per year – a salary package that ultimately priced out long-term admirers Arsenal.

Why Bayern Are Willing to Pay Premium

The German giants view Williams as the perfect replacement for Leroy Sané, who departed for Galatasaray on a free transfer. After also missing out on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool, sporting director Max Eberl is determined to land his “outstanding” alternative target.

However, the transfer isn’t without complications:

  • Williams remains emotionally torn about leaving his boyhood club
  • Athletic Bilbao have offered an improved contract to keep their star
  • The total package (fee + wages) approaches €100m commitment

London Clubs Priced Out

Fabrizio Romano revealed the financial realities scuppering Premier League interest: “Nico is already requesting important money… and could get even better terms staying at Athletic.” This explains why Arsenal – despite tracking Williams for 18 months – never advanced past admiration.

For Bayern, the investment represents a statement signing as they rebuild under new manager Vincent Kompany. But as Romano cautions: “The story isn’t easy.” With Williams’ heart and Bilbao’s contract offer in the balance, this transfer saga still has twists remaining before the summer window closes.

One thing’s certain: if Bayern succeed, they’ll have landed one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers – and dealt a significant blow to two Premier League giants in the process.
