Los Blancos Close the Gap on Barcelona at the Top of La Liga with Solid Victory
Real Madrid moved within a point of La Liga leaders Barcelona after a dominant 2-0 win over Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu, thanks to goals from Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé.
The match began with Madrid in control, and they were awarded a penalty in the 30th minute after Getafe’s Allan Nyom brought down Antonio Rudiger in the box. While there was some debate over who should take the spot kick, it was Bellingham who confidently stepped up. With a hop, skip, and jump, the Englishman slotted the ball calmly down the middle, sending Getafe goalkeeper David Soria the wrong way.
Just eight minutes later, Bellingham turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass to Mbappé. The French striker took it in his stride and finished with composure from outside the box, his shot clattering in off the post for his eighth La Liga goal of the season.
Despite their dominance, Real Madrid were denied a second penalty when a shot from Mbappé hit a Getafe player’s hand. After a VAR review, the decision was overturned. Mbappé also had several other chances to extend his tally but was unable to find the back of the net, missing a handful of opportunities.
Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Athletic Club on Wednesday before traveling to Girona on Saturday. Meanwhile, Getafe will turn their attention to Copa del Rey action against fourth-tier side Orihuela, before a crucial clash with Espanyol in La Liga.
Mbappé’s goal was a reminder of his quality and what Real Madrid had hoped to see more of following his arrival. However, despite his goal, there were moments where the Frenchman could have had more. His missed chances will surely be a source of frustration for the player, who is still adjusting to life in Madrid.
Player of the Match: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)
Bellingham’s first-half performance was nothing short of spectacular. He scored a calm penalty and set up Mbappé’s goal with an inch-perfect pass. Although he was taken off at halftime as a precaution, his contribution to the game was invaluable and highlighted his growing importance to the team.
