Portuguese giants’ leadership race heats up with bold pledges to bring Man City captain home, while manager Bruno Lage adds fuel to the fire.
The presidential election at Portuguese club Benfica has taken a dramatic turn, with one candidate making the return of Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva a central pillar of his campaign. João Noronha Lopes, a contender in the October 25th vote, has publicly declared that a contract is already waiting for the 31-year-old midfielder.
“I can confirm that a contract is waiting for Bernardo Silva,” Noronha Lopes told Portuguese media. “I really want to bring Bernardo in in January. He embodies everything I want for Benfica: identity, a winning culture, and he’s a huge Benfica fan.”
Current Benfica manager Bruno Lage, who worked with Silva during his youth career at the club, cautiously waded into the speculation. While stating he didn’t want to get involved in the “political side,” he confidently predicted, “From what I know about Bernardo… soon, I don’t know when, but soon, he will be a Benfica player regardless of the president.”
Silva, who is in the final year of his contract with Manchester City after being named captain by Pep Guardiola this summer, is a beloved academy graduate. His potential homecoming has become a hot-button issue in a crowded field of presidential candidates.
The election promises have extended beyond Silva, with another candidate, Cristóvão Carvalho, making an even more audacious claim: that he would appoint former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as coach. Carvalho stated he needs “a coach of the highest level” who has won the Champions League and claimed Klopp is the “only one name that comes to mind.”
The bold pledges have set the stage for a fiercely contested election, with the future of one of the Premier League’s biggest stars unexpectedly taking center stage in a political battle thousands of miles away.
