Nigerian Artists Shine Among Global Contenders
The BET Awards have announced their 2024 nominees, with Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Tems receiving top nominations. The awards, known as “Culture’s Biggest Night,” will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, 2024.
Burna Boy, known as the African Giant, is nominated in two major categories: Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. He will compete against big names like Drake, Usher, Chris Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Gunna.
Tems also earned two significant nominations, one for Best Video Director and another for Best Gospel/Inspirational Song for “Me & U.”
Ayra Starr, born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, had a remarkable year, receiving three nominations: Best New Artist, Best African Act, and Best HER for her single “Commas.” She leads among Nigerian artists in nominations. Additionally, Davido and Lojay are up for the Viewer’s Choice Award for their collaboration on Chris Brown’s “Sensational.” Asake is nominated for Best International Act, and Seyi Vibez is in the running for Viewer’s Choice Best International New Act.
On the global stage, American rapper Drake leads with seven nominations, followed by Nicki Minaj with six. J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, and Victoria Monét each received five nominations, while 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla, and Usher each secured four.
The 2024 BET Awards, themed “Stand on Culture,” will air live on BET at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
