Bruno Fernandes Calls for More Signings After Lazy Pre-Season Display

Man United Captain Urges Squad Competition as Manager Amorim Backs Current Players

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has called for reinforcements after admitting his team’s performance in their final US pre-season match was “a little bit lazy.”

The Red Devils wrapped up their American tour with a mixed 2-2 draw against Everton, having previously secured convincing wins over West Ham (2-1) and Bournemouth (4-1). While Fernandes acknowledged the positives of bonding and integrating new signings, he made it clear that United still need more depth to compete at the highest level.

“We Were Lazy—We Have to Improve”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Fernandes didn’t mince words about the Everton draw:
“It’s been positive overall, but we didn’t want to finish like this. Our performance wasn’t the best, and we were a little bit lazy today. That’s something we have to avoid because laziness can cost you at any moment.”

The Portuguese midfielder also stressed the need for further signings to push the squad, saying:
“It’s improving, but it’s not where it needs to be. I don’t want to criticize anyone—the club is doing its best with the financial situation. But it’s clear we need more competition and quality to make everyone raise their game. Hopefully, we can get one or two more players to help with that.”

Amorim’s Response: “We Have the Players to Compete”

Manager Ruben Amorim responded diplomatically, backing his current squad while acknowledging Fernandes’ ambition:
“It’s good that players feel this way—it shows they understand what’s needed. Every team can improve with more signings, but we already have players who can create that competition. We just need to keep developing as a unit, and I’m happy with the squad we have.”

Tough Start to the Season Ahead

United will play one final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 9 before their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier, with a Manchester derby at the Etihad looming on September 14.

With Fernandes openly pushing for reinforcements and Amorim balancing expectations, the pressure is on United’s hierarchy to deliver before the transfer window closes. Will they act on their captain’s plea? Or will they trust the current squad to step up when the real action begins?
