Club captain, disillusioned after latest managerial sacking, could seek exit with major European clubs on alert.
A fresh wave of uncertainty is hitting Manchester United, with a new report suggesting captain Bruno Fernandes may now be considering his future at the club following the dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese playmaker, who turned down a massive offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal last summer because he wanted to “play at the highest level and compete for major titles,” is said to be deeply frustrated by the continued instability at Old Trafford. With Michael Carrick just appointed as the latest caretaker manager—the club’s 12th coach in 13 years is due to be hired this summer—there is a growing fear Fernandes has “had enough.”
According to the report, Fernandes had a positive relationship with his compatriot Amorim, and his departure has hit the skipper hard. A source questioned whether the 29-year-old, whose ambitions are to win the biggest trophies, will tolerate another period of transition and tumult.
Despite being under contract until 2027, a key clause could facilitate a departure. It is reported that Fernandes’ contract includes a provision allowing him to leave for a foreign club for a fee of around £57 million—a figure that would immediately alert top European sides.
Bayern Munich, who proved with the signing of Harry Kane they are willing to invest heavily in elite players in their 30s, are long-term admirers. The clause could also make a move feasible for other giants like Barcelona, while interest from Saudi Arabia is expected to return.
As Carrick prepares for his first game in charge against Manchester City this weekend, tasked with steadying a rocking ship, his biggest challenge may be convincing his most important player and personality that his future still lies in Manchester.
