Capitol invasion: Facebook and Twitter lock Trump account

Facebook and Twitter took the extraordinary step on Wednesday of locking President Donald Trump’s account on their platforms after his supporters stormed the Capitol building to protest the election.

Twitter announced Wednesday night that it has locked Donald Trump’s account for 12 hours.

The Twitter Safety team removed three tweets “that were posted Wednesday today for violations of its rules.

“This means that the account of @realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets,” the social media team tweeted.

Twitter is Trump’s favourite social media platform, where he has 88.7million followers.

The platform has also been his favourite where he drops whimsical ideas as president.

In recent months, Twitter has had many issues with Trump, over his lies and outright violations of the platform’s rules.

On Wednesday, Twitter, first flagged two tweets posted by Trump.

One of them was a video, in which he called the insurrectionists who sacked the Congress patriots.

Facebook also blocked Trump from posting on its platform for 24 hours, the company said, after it removed a video he posted to his supporters who participated in the riot. Trump will also face a 24-hour block on Facebook-owned Instagram.

“We’ve assessed two policy violations against President Trump’s Page which will result in a 24-hour feature block, meaning he will lose the ability to post on the platform during that time,” Facebook said in a tweet.
