Rematch of last year’s final looms as Magpies draw Citizens, while Blues learn their path to Wembley in Wednesday’s draw.
The stage is set for the Carabao Cup semi-finals after Wednesday night’s draw, pitching Newcastle United against Manchester City in a heavyweight repeat of last season’s final, while Chelsea will host the winner of next week’s clash between Arsenal and Crystal Palace.
The draw followed the conclusion of the quarter-finals, where Manchester City booked their spot with a comfortable 2-0 win over Brentford. A stunning first-half strike from Rayan Cherki and a fortunate second from Savinho did the damage at the Etihad. A delighted Pep Guardiola singled out Cherki’s opener for special praise, saying, “Close to the 18-yard box of the opponent he is an exceptional player. It was a fantastic goal… I am happy that it opened the game.”
Newcastle, the defending champions, secured their place in more dramatic fashion at St. James’ Park. After Yoane Wissa’s early opener for Fulham was quickly cancelled out by Sasa Lukic, the Magpies needed a stoppage-time winner from 17-year-old Lewis Miley to snatch a 2-1 victory. A proud Eddie Howe hailed the teenager’s performance, telling Sky Sports, “He’s here on merit, he believes that he’s more than good enough to play at this level. Not just play but excel.”
Chelsea had already confirmed their semi-final berth on Tuesday, overcoming Cardiff City 3-1 in Wales thanks to a brace from Alejandro Garnacho and a goal from Pedro Neto.
The final piece of the semi-final puzzle will be decided next Tuesday, December 23, when Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal host Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium. The winner of that tie will face Chelsea, with the first leg to be played at Stamford Bridge.
In the other semi-final, Newcastle will host Manchester City in the first leg. The ties are scheduled for the weeks beginning January 12 and February 2, with the winners advancing to the Wembley final at the end of February.
