Carlos Baleba Faces Tough Decision as Manchester United Make Move for Brighton Star

Midfielder’s Personal Philosophy Clashes with Potential Big-Money Transfer

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba may soon face a dilemma that goes against his own principles, as Manchester United explore a shock move for the talented midfielder.

On Wednesday, reports emerged that United have initiated contact with Brighton—through intermediaries—to discuss a potential deal for the 20-year-old. The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that while Brighton currently have no plans to sell Baleba this summer, United remain keen and are awaiting clarity on whether a transfer is feasible.

If the move materializes, it would mark another statement signing for United, who have already secured RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško. However, for Baleba, the transfer would mean breaking an unwritten rule he set for himself.

Brighton have become known for developing and selling top talents, with Moisés Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister, and João Pedro all departing for hefty fees in recent years. But when asked last November about following a similar path, Baleba made it clear that his focus was on hard work, not big-club ambitions.

“I don’t really think like that—playing for two or three years and then leaving,” he told Sky Sports“Me? I just work. In my head, it’s all about helping my club. If I can help a teammate, I will. If they can help me, I’ll accept that to push forward. I just work to improve and progress for the future.”

He added: “Big clubs wanting me doesn’t worry me or excite me. I just need to work hard and keep a cool head. Being the ‘star’ isn’t for me—I prefer to keep my head down and focus on the pitch.”

Since joining Brighton in 2023, Baleba has caught the eye of several elite clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City. Now, with United stepping forward, the young midfielder must decide whether to stay true to his philosophy or embrace a high-profile move.

Brighton’s stance remains firm—but in football, money and ambition often talk. Will Baleba’s loyalty outweigh the lure of Old Trafford? The coming days may provide the answer.
