Interim Boss Hails Team’s “Fantastic” Performance But Warns Against Complacency After Dream Debut
An elated Michael Carrick hailed a “magical” and “pretty good” start to his time as Manchester United’s interim manager after overseeing a stunning 2-0 victory over rivals Manchester City at a euphoric Old Trafford.
Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu in the second half sealed a result that Carrick admitted surpassed all hopes for his first game in charge. “It is a great start – there is no getting away from that,” he said, beaming. “For it to pan out like that, the boys were fantastic in so many ways.”

Carrick revealed that his players drew immense energy from a raucous home crowd, describing the atmosphere as a powerful motivator. “I said this can be a magical place,” he shared. “The players left the dressing room unbelievably desperate to do well.”
Despite the delirium, the former United midfielder was quick to ground expectations, warning his squad that they have now set a new standard. “We are not getting carried away massively,” he cautioned. “That is the challenge now… Consistency is the key to any success. We have got a good foundation to build on.”
The result was a bitter pill for City boss Pep Guardiola, who offered no excuses. “The better team won,” he conceded. “They had the energy we didn’t have, so congratulations.” While he felt United’s Diogo Dalot should have been sent off for a first-half challenge, Guardiola refused to blame the officials, stating, “It is not about that… To win you have to do better.”
For Carrick, the dream debut provides a powerful platform as he auditions for the permanent role, with a massive clash against Arsenal looming next week.
