United Seek to Build on Derby High as They Face Arsenal Test
Manchester United’s interim manager, Michael Carrick, has called on his team to balance confidence with composure as they travel to face Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday, riding the high of last weekend’s crucial derby victory over Manchester City.
A spirited 2-0 win at Old Trafford, sealed with second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu, brought a wave of optimism back to the club. However, Carrick was quick to ground expectations ahead of facing the in-form Gunners.
“It has been a good week—a big result, a big performance and a big uplift with the feeling inside the stadium,” Carrick said. “It is finding a balance between getting the encouragement and confidence from the game and keeping level-headed, keeping our feet on the ground. One game does not make you a great team, but it gives us a great foundation to build on.”
The challenge is significant. United currently sit fifth with 35 points, while Arsenal lead the table with 50. “Looking forward to the game, it’s a big challenge,” Carrick acknowledged. “They’re a very good team. They have so many strong points to their game. They are where they are for a reason.”
Carrick also commented on the future of midfielder Casemiro, following the club’s announcement that the Brazilian will leave when his contract expires this summer. He confirmed the decision predated his interim tenure and praised the veteran’s continued professionalism.
“The Casemiro announcement was for clarity as much as anything,” Carrick stated. “It was decided before I arrived. But the type of personality and character he is, it shows with his performance last week where he is mentally. I’ve had the conversation with him—he’s desperate to do well and finish well.”
