Interim Boss Praises Spirit but Admits United Lacked “Answers” in Scrappy Draw
Michael Carrick did not hide his dissatisfaction after his Manchester United side relied on a stoppage-time equalizer to salvage a 1–1 draw at struggling West Ham on Tuesday.
The interim manager saw his team fall behind to a Tomas Souček goal early in the second half and struggle to create clear chances until substitute Benjamin Sesko headed home a dramatic 96th-minute leveler.
“We were definitely not at our best,” Carrick acknowledged. “It’s a tough place to come and we didn’t have that sharpness to find the answers. I’m a little frustrated at that.”
While the result extends Carrick’s unbeaten start to five matches in charge, his post-match comments focused more on United’s lack of cutting edge than the late comeback. He praised the team’s spirit but highlighted clear room for improvement.
“Great spirit again, and we’ll take the point and move on,” he said. “For where we are and being together for a short space of time, in the end we have to take a point. It didn’t come easy.”
The bright spot was another crucial contribution from Sesko, whose fifth goal in six games continues his turnaround after a difficult start at Old Trafford. “Fantastic finish. He has done it again,” Carrick said. “Delighted for him. Another big goal and a good step.”
The draw leaves West Ham in the relegation zone, a situation that resonated with Carrick, who spent seven seasons at the London club. “I would love them to stay up,” he said. “It was a big part of my life… hopefully they stay up.”
While the late goal preserved fourth place in the Premier League, Carrick’s frank assessment signals he expects much more from his side as the season enters its decisive phase.
