In a much-anticipated announcement, Chelsea Football Club has officially confirmed the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager. The Argentine tactician will take charge of the team starting from July 1, signing a three-year contract with the club.
Pochettino, who had been out of work since his dismissal from Paris Saint-Germain last year, returns to the Premier League after his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur. His impressive stint with Spurs saw him lead the team to the Champions League final, but he was ultimately relieved of his duties shortly thereafter.
Despite his past successes, Pochettino faces a challenging task at Chelsea as the club finished a disappointing 12th in the Premier League this season, missing out on European football for the upcoming campaign. However, history offers a glimmer of hope, as the Blues previously bounced back from a subpar season to claim the Premier League title.
During the 2016/17 season, under the guidance of Antonio Conte, Chelsea secured the top spot after finishing in tenth place the previous year. Pochettino will undoubtedly aim to replicate such a resurgence and restore Chelsea’s competitiveness in the league.
One of the pressing issues that Pochettino will need to address is Chelsea’s lackluster goal-scoring record this season, with only three teams scoring fewer goals than the Blues’ tally of 36 in the top flight. Additionally, the club is keen on bolstering its attacking options, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen reportedly topping their wishlist. However, securing the Nigerian striker’s services may come at a hefty price, as Napoli has set a valuation of £125 million.
As Pochettino takes the helm, he will also need to address the size of Chelsea’s squad, which has become bloated over the years. Reports suggest that five academy products, namely Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, and Callum Hudson-Odoi, are being considered for potential transfers in order to streamline the squad and provide opportunities for their development.
Chelsea fans eagerly await the new era under Pochettino, hoping that his managerial expertise and tactical acumen will reignite the club’s fortunes in the upcoming season.
