Chelsea Beat Man Utd to Sign Liam Delap in £30m Deal as Striker Agrees Six-Year Contract

Ipswich Town Star Set for Medical Ahead of Club World Cup Debut

Chelsea have won the race to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap in a £30 million deal, beating Manchester United and other Premier League rivals to secure the highly rated 22-year-old.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Delap has agreed to a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, tying him to the club until 2031. The Blues are set to trigger his €35 million (£30m) release clause, with a medical scheduled for Monday before the transfer is officially confirmed.

The former Manchester City academy product enjoyed a breakout season at Ipswich, scoring 12 Premier League goals in 37 appearances—a form that attracted interest from Newcastle, Everton, and Man Utd. But Chelsea moved swiftly to secure his signature, with new boss Enzo Maresca keen to add firepower ahead of next season.

Delap could make his competitive debut as early as June 16 in the Club World Cup against Mexican side León, with further group-stage clashes against Flamengo and ES Tunis to follow. His arrival adds much-needed competition for Nicolas Jackson, whose inconsistent performances have frustrated fans despite flashes of brilliance.

The Winchester-born forward only joined Ipswich last summer in a surprise £15m move from Man City but has quickly proven himself as a clinical finisher. Chelsea will hope he can replicate—and even surpass—his Portman Road form as they look to climb back into the Premier League’s top four.

With the deal nearing completion, Delap now faces the challenge of establishing himself as Chelsea’s leading No.9—a role the club has struggled to fill reliably since the departure of Diego Costa. Can he be the answer? The Blues are betting £30m that he will.
