Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana One Yellow Card Away from Missing Anfield Showdown
Chelsea could be without two key players for their pivotal Premier League match against Liverpool, due to a rule regarding yellow card suspensions. Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana are both on the verge of receiving a one-game suspension, just as the Blues prepare to face league leaders Liverpool on October 20.
Having spent over £220 million on new signings and offloading 38 players this summer, Chelsea have quietly made progress under new manager Enzo Maresca. They currently sit fourth in the Premier League with 13 points, their only defeat coming against Manchester City on the opening weekend.
This weekend, Chelsea host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, but there’s concern as Cucurella and Fofana have each been booked four times this season. A fifth yellow card for either player against Forest would result in an automatic one-match suspension, ruling them out of the crucial trip to Anfield.
The suspension rule applies if a player collects five bookings in the first 19 games of the season. The bans are limited to Premier League matches and do not affect Carabao Cup or FA Cup fixtures. If a player picks up 10 yellow cards within the first 32 games, they face a two-game suspension.
With Forest, managed by Nuno Espirito Santo, sitting ninth and recently defeating Liverpool away, Cucurella and Fofana will need to tread carefully.
Chelsea recently secured a 4-2 victory over Gent in the UEFA Conference League, even without Cucurella and Fofana in the lineup. Manager Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance, stating, “We are performing well both in attack and defense. While there’s room for improvement, we’re happy with the progress.”
