Chelsea Make a Move for Newcastle’s Eddie Howe as Manager Search Intensifies

Blues Consider Proven Premier League Manager Despite Talks with Leading Candidate Liam Rosenior

Chelsea have reportedly made an approach to Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe as they intensify their search for a permanent successor to Enzo Maresca, according to Football Insider. The move signals the club’s desire to hire a manager with proven Premier League experience, even as talks continue with leading candidate Liam Rosenior.

The Blues are moving swiftly to appoint a new head coach after parting ways with Maresca on Thursday. The Italian’s departure followed a dismal run of just one win in seven Premier League games and reported tensions with the club’s hierarchy over a perceived lack of backing.

While transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Rosenior, currently in charge of Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg, remains the “leading candidate” and that talks are underway, Chelsea appear to be exploring alternatives.

The report states that the club has “sounded out” Eddie Howe, 48, regarding the vacancy. It remains unclear, however, whether Howe would consider leaving Newcastle mid-season for a club known for its managerial turbulence.

“We need someone who knows this league inside out,” said one source close to the club, highlighting the appeal of a manager like Howe, who has guided Newcastle to European football and established a clear playing identity.

Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has also been touted as a strong contender. Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy publicly backed the Austrian, telling talkSPORT, “Oliver Glasner is the one I would go for… He has proven himself to be an excellent manager.” Co-pundit Jermaine Pennant echoed the sentiment, praising Glasner’s ability to succeed at Palace “with one hand kind of tied behind your back.”

The club’s decision now appears to hinge on a choice between the continuity offered by Rosenior, who works within the BlueCo structure, and the instant Premier League pedigree of an established manager like Howe or Glasner. With a crucial match against Manchester City looming on Sunday, Chelsea’s hierarchy is under pressure to make a decisive appointment quickly.
