Geovany Quenda & Dario Essugo
Blues Beat Manchester United to Quenda, Add Rising Star Essugo to Bolster Squad Ahead of Busy Summer
Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the signings of Sporting CP duo Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo in a double deal worth €74.4 million. The move marks a significant coup for the Blues, who have beaten out competition from Manchester United to secure Quenda’s signature, while also finalizing the acquisition of Essugo after missing out on the young talent earlier this year.
Quenda, a versatile 22-year-old who has primarily played as a wing-back for Sporting, will join Chelsea for an initial fee of €50.8 million, with potential add-ons pushing the total to €52.1 million. Despite his defensive role in Lisbon, Chelsea’s management views him as a winger, a key factor in his decision to choose Stamford Bridge over Old Trafford. Quenda will remain with Sporting until the summer of 2026, continuing his development before making the switch to London.
Essugo, currently on loan at La Liga side Las Palmas, will join Chelsea for a fixed fee of €22.3 million in July. The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed during his time in Spain and is expected to provide depth and competition in Chelsea’s midfield, vying for a spot alongside Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, and other rising stars like Andrey Santos and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Essugo will be available for selection during Chelsea’s upcoming Club World Cup campaign, offering an immediate boost to Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Sporting CP confirmed the impending transfers in an official statement on their website, acknowledging the departure of two key players. Quenda leaves Lisbon after making 44 first-team appearances, contributing two goals and eight assists, while Essugo’s rapid rise in La Liga has made him one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
These signings are part of Chelsea’s ambitious recruitment strategy, with the club already securing five new players ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window. Alongside Quenda and Essugo, the Blues have added Estevao Willian, Kendry Paez, and Mike Penders to their ranks, signaling a clear intent to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level for years to come.
For Chelsea fans, the double signing represents a statement of intent, as the club continues to invest heavily in young, dynamic talent. With Quenda’s versatility and Essugo’s potential, the Blues are positioning themselves for a bright future under Maresca’s leadership.
