In a move that breaks from tradition, the Blues are set to improve the midfielder’s terms behind the scenes as a reward for his dominant form, with his manager hailing him as one of the world’s best.
Chelsea FC is preparing to hand a significant, and secret, pay rise to midfielder Moises Caicedo in recognition of his outstanding start to the season, which has established him as one of the Premier League’s most formidable players.
The 24-year-old Ecuadorian, who joined the club in a blockbuster €116 million move from Brighton in 2023, has been instrumental in driving Chelsea to third place in the league. With a series of commanding, all-action displays, Caicedo has cemented his status as a key figure in manager Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Despite being tied to a long-term contract that runs until 2032, the club is set to improve the financial terms of his existing deal privately. According to Sky Sports News’ chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol, this is a conscious strategy by Chelsea to reward performance without the public fanfare of a new contract.
“My understanding is that his contract already, Chelsea have him tied down to 2032. He won’t be getting a new contract, but what is going to happen behind the scenes in private is that the terms of his present deal are going to be improved,” Solhekol reported. “Chelsea’s position is: ‘Of course he’s playing fantastically well… we’re going to reward him but we don’t want the whole song and dance of announcing it.’”
This approach aligns with Chelsea’s model of offering contracts with lower base salaries but heavy performance-related incentives, ensuring players are directly rewarded for their contributions on the pitch.
The decision has been met with full approval from the technical staff, with Manager Enzo Maresca offering the highest of praise following a recent 1-0 victory over Tottenham.
“Moi, I think he’s showing how good he is. He’s top,” Maresca said. “He’s so humble, he’s such a good guy… for me, him and Manchester City’s Rodri, in this moment, they are the two best defensive midfielders in the world.”
