Chelsea told to pay at least £50m to sign Declan Rice as Blues are touted as ‘good fit’ for West Ham ace

Former West Ham winger Matt Jarvis has told talkSPORT it will take a bid of more than £50million to prise Declan Rice away from the London Stadium this summer.

The England international’s future with the Hammers has been questioned once again following reports earlier this week that Chelsea, the club Rice trained with as a youngster, are keen on bringing the 21-year-old back to Stamford Bridge.

Of course, their interest is dependent on the summer transfer window going ahead as planned amid the coronavirus crisis.

This was just the latest in a series of transfer rumours concerning the midfielder, who has also been strongly linked with Manchester United over the past year as well.

West Ham would surely be desperate to avoid losing their young starlet who has been a rare positive in an otherwise thoroughly disappointing season both on and off the pitch, with a tough fight against relegation resulting in fan protests against the club’s co-owners, David Gold and David Sullivan.

David Moyes returned for a second spell as West Ham manager last December when he replaced Manuel Pellegrini after the team’s form drastically worsened, but his appointment has seemingly yet to have the desired effect, with the club currently sitting 16th in the Premier League – only out the relegation places on goal difference.

However, Jarvis, who made 90 appearances in all competitions during three years with the Hammers, feels Rice needs to take care should he decide to leave the London Stadium this summer – believing his England place could come under threat if he is made to sit on the sidelines at a new club.

“He’s a very talented young player who’s obviously playing week in, week out at West Ham and also playing for England,” Jarvis exclusively told talkSPORT. “He’s really got on to the scene and doing extremely well.

“He’s going to want to continue to improve and it’s just whether he feels if it’s the right time to move on or not.

“Chelsea are a club who are going in the right direction under Frank Lampard; the youngsters are getting their opportunities, so it would be a good fit for him to go in with a few other youngsters.

Tony Cascarino reckons some West Ham fans would choose owners leaving over Premier League survival

“He’s a completely different player to what Lampard was, but he [Lampard] obviously knows the role of a midfield player and he manages [N’Golo] Kante, who’s probably the best one in his role.

“It’s going to be a difficult decision for Rice to make because both the Manchester clubs may be interested in him.

“At the minute he’s playing week in, week out, and Gareth Southgate will want to be able to see him playing every week. He doesn’t want to be going to a different club and be sat on the bench and not playing, because that won’t enhance his place in the England set-up

“He’s a really important figure at West Ham. West Ham won’t want to let him go as he’s an integral part of their team, so they’ll be expecting, if bids are coming in, that they’ll have to be a lot higher than the usual one.

“He’s young and he’s playing for England already; you’ve got to be looking at probably above £50m in this market.”
