Former Barca Starlet’s Transfer Sparks Allegations of Misconduct Against Club’s Leadership
Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has unexpectedly found himself entangled in Barcelona’s internal political conflicts, as accusations of corruption and mismanagement swirl around the Catalan club’s leadership.
Guiu, who joined Chelsea last summer in a €6 million deal, has impressed since his move, scoring six goals in six UEFA Conference League matches. However, his departure from Barcelona has been criticized by political figures and former presidential candidates, sparking a heated debate about the club’s decision-making.
Allegations Against Barcelona’s Board
Victor Font, leader of the “Sí al Futur” campaign advocating for political reform at Camp Nou, has openly criticized current Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco for their role in selling Guiu.
Font suggested that the sale of the 19-year-old striker was unnecessary and possibly driven by ulterior motives, particularly as Barcelona simultaneously signed Brazilian forward Vitor Roque in a high-profile deal.
“We had Marc Guiu, and despite our financial struggles, we signed Vitor Roque,” Font told RAC1. “If Roque were the new Ronaldinho, it would make sense to prioritize him. But it’s clear he doesn’t have the characteristics to play for Barcelona.”
Font further alleged that Deco, who previously worked as an agent, pushed for Roque’s signing even before taking on his current role as sporting director.
“Deco offered Vitor Roque to Barcelona before he was sporting director. As soon as he took the position, he finalized the deal. What is not normal raises suspicion,” Font said, calling for transparency in the club’s financial and strategic decisions.
Deco’s Legal Response
In response to these allegations, Deco has denied any wrongdoing and has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Font. Barcelona insiders have also defended the decision to sign Roque, arguing that the Brazilian is a long-term investment for the club’s future.
Chelsea Reaping the Benefits
While the debate rages on at Camp Nou, Chelsea has benefited from Guiu’s services. The young striker has quickly made a name for himself in London, showcasing his offensive capabilities and proving to be a bargain acquisition for the Blues.
A Broader Reflection of Barca’s Struggles
The controversy highlights deeper issues within Barcelona’s management, with questions about transparency and financial priorities at the forefront. As political figures continue to clash, the sale of Marc Guiu and the signing of Vitor Roque have become symbols of the ongoing unrest at one of football’s most storied clubs.
