Ukrainian Winger Denies Wrongdoing as Investigation Underway
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been provisionally suspended from football after failing a doping test, according to multiple reports. The test, conducted in late October 2024, revealed a banned substance in Mudryk’s A sample, triggering the Football Association’s standard disciplinary process.
Club and Player Respond
Chelsea released a statement confirming the development and reiterating their commitment to supporting Mudryk while cooperating with relevant authorities.
“Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk concerning an adverse finding in a routine urine test,” the club said.
“Both the Club and Mykhailo fully support The FA’s testing programme… Mykhailo has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. Both Mykhailo and the Club will now work with the relevant authorities to establish what has caused the adverse finding.”
Mudryk himself responded, expressing shock and denying any deliberate use of prohibited substances.
“This has come as a complete shock as I have NEVER knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules,” Mudryk said. “I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon.”
Investigation Underway
The Daily Mail reports that part of Chelsea’s investigation centers on the possibility of a contaminated supplement, potentially sourced outside the UK, as the banned substance involved is reportedly unavailable domestically.
Awaiting the B Sample
The outcome of Mudryk’s B sample test, expected in the coming days, will determine the next steps. If confirmed, the 23-year-old could face a ban of up to four years, as per anti-doping regulations.
Mudryk’s Season and Struggles
Mudryk, who joined Chelsea in January 2023 for €100 million from Shakhtar Donetsk, has faced a challenging spell at Stamford Bridge. While his performances in the Conference League—including three goals and an assist—have offered glimpses of promise, he has struggled for form in the Premier League, making just seven appearances this season without contributing a goal or assist.
His most recent appearance for Chelsea was on November 28, when he scored in a 2-0 win over Heidenheim in Europe. Officially sidelined since December 1 due to “illness,” this suspension now sheds further light on his absence.
Mudryk’s future at Chelsea remains uncertain, particularly with reports of his falling down the pecking order under new manager Enzo Maresca and speculation about a January transfer. For now, the Ukrainian international, capped 28 times for his country, will await the results of the ongoing investigation while maintaining his innocence.
