City’s Late Onslaught Breaks Brave Burnley’s Resistance

Haaland’s stoppage-time brace adds gloss to the scoreline after a stubborn Clarets side had frustrated the champions for an hour at the Etihad.

Manchester City eventually overpowered a determined Burnley side 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, but not before the newly-promoted team provided a stern test, frustrating the champions for over an hour.

Pep Guardiola’s men, looking to bounce back from a disappointing draw with Arsenal, took an early lead through a Maxime Estève own goal. However, Burnley showed tremendous fight, capitalizing on a rare City mistake at the back. Jaidon Anthony pounced on the error and coolly slotted home an equalizer that stunned the home crowd.

The game remained finely balanced until the 70th minute when Matheus Nunes finally broke Burnley’s resolve to restore City’s lead. From there, the visitors’ resistance crumbled. A second own goal from the unfortunate Estève effectively sealed the points, before Erling Haaland took center stage in stoppage time, netting a quickfire brace to give the scoreline a commanding look that belied Burnley’s long spell of competitiveness.
