VAR Decision on Brooks’ Hair Pull Sparks Debate as James’ Late Free-Kick Rescues a Point
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca expressed frustration following a dramatic 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, marked by a historic VAR decision and a last-minute equalizer by captain Reece James.
The incident in question involved Bournemouth’s David Brooks, who appeared to pull Marc Cucurella’s hair in the second half. Despite being advised by VAR to review the action for violent conduct, referee Robert Jones opted to stick with his initial decision, issuing a yellow card rather than a red. This marked the first time in Premier League history that a referee has overturned a VAR-recommended red-card review after consulting the pitchside monitor.
Maresca Furious Over VAR Call
Maresca did not hold back in his post-match comments, calling the decision baffling.
“For me, if there’s no intention to play the ball, it’s a red,” Maresca said. “How can they judge that it wasn’t dangerous? The intention was clearly to go against Cucurella. Hopefully, we’ll have better luck with referees in the future.”
Chelsea captain Reece James added, “When the referee goes to the monitor, it’s rarely a good sign. There are positives to take from the game, but this decision leaves mixed emotions.”
The Premier League explained the decision, stating Brooks’ actions were deemed reckless but not violent, warranting only a yellow card. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola defended the referee, saying, “There was no violence. Brooks just wanted to stop the counter. It was a clear yellow.”
James Rescues a Point
Despite the controversy, James’ 95th-minute free-kick salvaged a draw for Chelsea, extending their winless Premier League streak to five matches. Maresca praised his captain, who returned from injury to make a decisive impact.
“He deserved it after a difficult period. It gave us the point, and now the goal is to keep him fit for the rest of the season,” Maresca said.
Chelsea dominated the first half, with Nicolas Jackson playing a key role. He set up Cole Palmer’s opener with a brilliant assist but missed crucial chances, including hitting the post and blasting over from close range.
Bournemouth capitalized in the second half, equalizing through Justin Kluivert’s penalty and taking the lead with Antoine Semenyo’s powerful strike.
Maresca Reflects on Missed Chances
Reflecting on the match, Maresca lamented his team’s inability to close out the game.
“Our first half was one of the best this season. We created so many chances and should have been at least 2-0 up,” he said. “After the penalty, everything changed. It’s frustrating because the game was completely under control.”
Chelsea remains in search of their first league win since November, with Maresca urging his side to find consistency as they look to climb the Premier League table.
