Ronaldo’s Missed Penalty Overshadowed by Portugal’s Shoot-Out Victory Over Slovenia
Cristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after his penalty was saved during Portugal’s round-of-16 match against Slovenia at Euro 2024. The missed opportunity came in the first half of extra time, with a spot in the quarter-finals on the line.
The game had been locked at 0-0 when Ronaldo stepped up to take the crucial penalty after Vanja Drkusic fouled Diogo Jota in the box. Slovenia’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak made an incredible save, tipping Ronaldo’s shot onto the post.
Ronaldo, visibly distraught, was consoled by teammate Bruno Fernandes as the team took a short break before the second half of extra time. Despite the setback, Portugal managed to hold on and take the match to a penalty shoot-out.
In the shoot-out, Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Slovenia’s first penalty, giving Portugal an early advantage. Ronaldo redeemed himself by scoring his second penalty of the night, this time confidently sending the ball past Oblak. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also converted their penalties, while Costa made two more crucial saves.
The match ended in a shoot-out victory for Portugal, securing their place in the quarter-finals against France, who had edged past Belgium 1-0 in their round-of-16 tie. Despite Ronaldo’s emotional moment, Portugal’s triumph ensured their continued journey in Euro 2024.
