Peter Crouch hopes Liverpool bring in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano before the transfer deadline.
Having enjoyed so much success in recent years, the reigning Premier League and Club World Cup champions are in the unusual position of struggling for coherence and results.
Liverpool lost 3-2 at bitter rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, compounding Thursday’s shock home loss against Burnley.
Many of their recent issues, particularly prevalent against United, have centred around the build up of injuries in their centre-half position, with both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk suffering long-term injuries.
France international Upamecano is one name that has been linked with a move to Liverpool after putting in some impressive performances in the Bundesliga over the past couple of campaigns.
And Crouch believes Upamecano would be the perfect addition to solve the Reds’ defensive problems.
“Everyone in football can see that they need a centre-half. You’d think they would bring someone in before the deadline,” Crouch told talkSPORT.
“But we can’t criticise Liverpool’s transfer policy. It’s been unbelievable over the past couple of years, the players they’ve brought in and have improved.
“If it’s not the correct centre-half they won’t bring him in and the policy has gone well so far.
“There are so many top centre-halves out there. Upamecano is a top centre-half, I think he’s one of the best in Europe. He’s the best one out there if they can possibly get him.”
