Crystal Palace Face January Marc Guéhi Sale to Avoid Free Transfer

Liverpool Lead Chase for £40m Defender as Bayern and City Circle, But Player May Wait for Summer

Crystal Palace are under mounting pressure to sell star defender Marc Guéhi this month or risk losing him for nothing, with Liverpool emerging as the frontrunners in a high-stakes transfer tussle.

The England international’s contract expires this summer, forcing Palace into a critical decision. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the club, led by manager Oliver Glasner, is now asking for between £35 million and £40 million to part with their prized centre-back.

Liverpool’s interest is particularly urgent. A proposed move to Anfield collapsed at the last minute in a previous window, and the Reds are determined to finally secure their target. Their defensive needs have deepened following an ACL injury to new signing Giovanni Leoni, stalled contract talks with Ibrahima Konaté, and captain Virgil van Dijk now approaching 35.

However, a major complication has emerged for all suitors, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Plettenberg reports that Guéhi himself is “favouring a free transfer in the summer,” a scenario that would grant him maximum freedom and a lucrative signing-on fee, but would deliver a severe financial blow to his current club.

The coming fortnight promises a tense wait for all parties. Palace must persuade Guéhi to accept a move now or reconcile themselves to a significant loss of revenue. For Liverpool and other admirers, the choice is between meeting Palace’s valuation in January or entering a costly and uncertain battle for his signature on a free transfer in just a few months’ time.
