David Alaba Set for Real Madrid Return After Year-Long Injury Absence

Austrian Defender Could Feature Against Las Palmas at the Santiago Bernabéu

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that defender David Alaba is set to make his long-awaited return from injury in Sunday’s LaLiga clash against Las Palmas at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 32-year-old has been sidelined for over a year following an ACL injury.

Alaba’s Road to Recovery

The Austrian international sustained a ruptured ACL in his left knee during a league game in December 2023. He underwent surgery and faced another procedure in May 2024 to aid his recovery.

Since joining Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in July 2021, Alaba has made 102 appearances, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. His return is seen as a significant boost for Los Blancos, who are grappling with defensive injuries.

“[Alaba] is fine. He played 40 minutes yesterday with good sensations,” Ancelotti shared during a press conference. “Obviously, he needs more rhythm, but the knee is responding well. He won’t start tomorrow, but he could get some minutes.”

Defensive Reinforcements Needed

Madrid’s defensive ranks have been thinned by injuries to key players Éder Militão and Dani Carvajal, both also sidelined with ACL injuries. Alaba’s return provides much-needed experience and depth as Madrid aim to maintain their strong position in LaLiga.

Squad Updates and Key Absences

While Alaba has been included in the squad for the match, star forward Vinícius Júnior will miss out due to suspension. The Brazilian was shown a red card in Madrid’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Valencia in their previous league outing.

Real Madrid were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Las Palmas earlier this season and will look to secure a decisive win at home this time, with Alaba potentially making his comeback on the pitch.

The Santiago Bernabéu faithful will undoubtedly be eager to see Alaba back in action, a testament to his resilience and determination after a challenging year away from the game.
