Gunners Goalkeeper Pulls Off Stunning Double Save to Deny Italian Side in Goalless Draw
David Raya delivered a standout performance to help Arsenal earn a hard-fought point in their UEFA Champions League opener against Atalanta in Bergamo. The Spanish goalkeeper made a sensational double save to deny Mateo Retegui and preserve a goalless draw for the Gunners in a match where clear chances were rare.
The key moment of the game came in the 52nd minute when Arsenal conceded a penalty after Thomas Partey fouled Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson inside the box. Retegui stepped up to take the spot-kick but saw his effort saved by Raya, who then sprang back to his feet to block Retegui’s close-range header on the rebound. The remarkable double save kept Arsenal in the game and ensured they left Italy with a valuable point.
“They didn’t create many chances, just the penalty and that’s it,” Raya said after the match. “A point away from home in the first Champions League game is a good result. We weren’t at our best today. If we can’t win the game, then we don’t lose it. I was lucky to go the right way and save it. I was quick enough to get up and save the rebound.”
The match saw few opportunities for either side, with Bukayo Saka coming closest for Arsenal in the first half. His low free-kick was saved by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. In the second half, substitute Raheem Sterling set up Gabriel Martinelli, but the Brazilian forward failed to convert, sending his shot over the bar.
Arsenal’s cautious approach against an Atalanta side that won the UEFA Europa League last season paid off defensively, with the Gunners recording their fourth clean sheet in five competitive matches this season. Despite a moment of madness from Partey, who conceded the penalty with a clumsy challenge, Raya’s heroics ensured Arsenal remained resolute at the back.
Raya’s performance has solidified his place as a crucial figure for Arsenal this season. The 29-year-old, who once played in the National League for Southport, has quickly become a fan favorite at the Emirates. His heroics against Atalanta earned him the title of Player of the Match.
Arsenal will now turn their focus back to the Premier League as they prepare to face Manchester City on Sunday. Their next Champions League fixture is at home against Paris Saint-Germain in October.
