Dutch Defender’s 96th-Minute Heroics Stun Spurs in a Rollercoaster Premier League Clash
In a stunning finale at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Matthijs de Ligt rose highest in the sixth minute of stoppage time to head home a dramatic equalizer, snatching a 2-2 draw for Manchester United and breaking Tottenham hearts.
The match, a tense affair between two sides separated by only goal difference, exploded into life after a cagey opening half-hour. Against the run of early play, it was United who struck first. After a scrappy period in the Spurs box, the ball found its way to Amad Diallo, whose perfect cross was met by a superb near-post header from Bryan Mbeumo, notching his fifth goal against Tottenham.
Spurs emerged from the break with renewed vigor, but found United goalkeeper Senne Lammens in inspired form. The Belgian shot-stopper made a series of crucial saves, first denying Cristian Romero with a brilliant reaction and then palming away a powerful Joao Palhinha volley.
The home side’s frustration was compounded when a seemingly smooth finish from Brennan Johnson was chalked off for offside. Just as momentum seemed to be slipping away, substitute Mathys Tel provided the spark Spurs desperately needed. Within five minutes of entering the fray, the Frenchman expertly turned De Ligt and saw his deflected shot ripple the net, sending the home crowd into delirium.
The drama reached a fever pitch in the dying moments. Spurs thought they had won it when Richarlison expertly guided a Wilson Odobert effort into the bottom corner with just minutes left on the clock. But United, refusing to surrender, launched one final attack. A corner swung in by Bruno Fernandes found De Ligt at the back post, who powered his header home to secure a memorable, last-gasp point for the Red Devils and extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
