Midfielder Set to Miss North London Derby After Controversial Dismissal
An independent panel has unanimously upheld Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice’s controversial red card from the Premier League match against Brighton, ruling that referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision was correct.
Rice, 25, was sent off on August 31 during the 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium after receiving a second yellow card for rolling the ball away from Brighton’s Joel Veltman. The incident occurred in the 49th minute when Veltman attempted to take a quick free kick, leading to Rice’s dismissal.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta expressed his frustration after the game, calling the decision “amazing” and highlighting inconsistencies in officiating. However, the Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel, which reviews major refereeing decisions, supported Kavanagh’s decision, stating that Rice’s actions were “clear, deliberate, and impactful,” warranting the second booking.
The ruling means Rice will miss Arsenal’s crucial North London derby against Tottenham this weekend, but he is expected to return for their Champions League opener against Atalanta on September 19.
