Real Madrid Star Embraces No. 9 Role After Stunning Season as Europe’s Top Scorer
France manager Didier Deschamps has firmly endorsed Kylian Mbappé as his team’s leading centre-forward, praising the Real Madrid star’s remarkable adaptation to the role after years of resistance. The debate over Mbappé’s best position has followed him throughout his career, but his record-breaking 2024/25 campaign—where he finished as Europe’s most lethal scorer—has seemingly settled the discussion.
“He is used to playing in that position and is very effective,” Deschamps said ahead of France’s Nations League third-place playoff against Germany. “It’s no coincidence he finished as Europe’s top scorer; no one has matched his numbers. He may not have [Olivier] Giroud’s legacy yet, but his best role is clearly as a number nine.”
Mbappé himself has undergone a shift in mindset. Once vocal about his preference for the left wing—where he could cut inside and exploit his explosive pace—the 26-year-old now acknowledges his growth as a central striker. “Playing as a nine for club and country isn’t identical,” he admitted. “But I’ve improved. I’m adapting. Football is unpredictable, and right now, I’m a centre-forward.”
The transformation became undeniable at Real Madrid this season. Under Carlo Ancelotti’s guidance, Mbappé thrived as the focal point of attack while Vinícius Jr. dominated the left flank. The tactical tweak not only silenced doubts but also showcased Mbappé’s versatility, proving he can excel without relying on his preferred wide role.
With France seeking redemption after their Nations League semifinal exit, Deschamps’ faith in Mbappé’s new identity could be key. As the superstar continues redefining his game, one question remains: Is this the evolution that cements his legacy among football’s all-time greats?
