Real Madrid has announced that Eden Hazard will be leaving the club after enduring four seasons plagued by injuries at the Spanish giants. The decision was confirmed by the club on Saturday, marking the end of Hazard’s tenure with Real Madrid.
The 32-year-old Belgian forward joined Real Madrid in 2019, transferring from Chelsea in a high-profile move worth 115 million euros ($123 million). During his presentation at the Santiago Bernabeu, Hazard was greeted by a crowd of up to 50,000 supporters, reflecting the high expectations placed upon him.
Hazard showcased his exceptional skills in his final match with Chelsea, scoring two goals to contribute to the team’s 4-1 victory over Arsenal in the Europa League final. Regrettably, his time in Spain was marred by persistent ankle injuries, which hindered his performances and limited his playing time.
Throughout his Real Madrid career, Hazard made a mere 54 appearances in the league, including just six this season, and managed to score seven goals in total. His underwhelming contribution on the pitch, primarily due to his unfortunate injury setbacks, led to the decision for the player and the club to part ways.
In an official statement, Real Madrid declared, “Real Madrid Football Club and Eden Hazard have reached an agreement whereby the player will leave the club as of 30 June 2023. Real Madrid would like to express our affection to Eden Hazard, and we wish him and his family the best of luck for the next stage of his career.”
In addition to Hazard’s departure, it was revealed that forward Marco Asensio will also be leaving Real Madrid at the end of his contract in June. Asensio, who achieved tremendous success during his time with the club, clinching LaLiga and the Champions League three times each, as well as the Copa del Rey this season, amassed an impressive record of 61 goals in 285 appearances.
While Asensio often made a significant impact as a substitute, he struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter for Los Blancos. His departure marks the end of an era for the talented forward, who contributed greatly to Real Madrid’s triumphs during his tenure.
As both Hazard and Asensio bid farewell to Real Madrid, the club now faces the task of rebuilding and reshaping its squad for the future, aiming to reclaim their status as one of Europe’s dominant forces in the coming seasons.
