Lawyer Deji Adeyanju Claims Anti-Graft Agency Has No Clear Justification for Detention
Controversy has erupted over the arrest of popular social media critic Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), with activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of failing to provide a valid reason for his detention.
Adeyanju, who visited VDM at the EFCC headquarters on Monday night, took to Facebook to express frustration over the unclear circumstances of the arrest. He revealed that despite repeated demands, the anti-graft agency could not produce any formal petition against the influencer—contradicting earlier reports that he was detained following multiple complaints from the public.
“I returned to Nigeria this evening and went straight to see VDM at the EFCC office,” Adeyanju wrote. “After meeting with him and pressing for answers, the Commission admitted there was no petition against him. We still don’t understand why he was arrested.”

The confusion deepened after the BBC Pidgin initially reported that VDM’s arrest was linked to several petitions filed against him. The report cited EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, but the agency later denied the claims, leaving many Nigerians questioning the true motive behind the detention.
VDM, known for his outspoken commentary on social and political issues, has a large following and has previously faced legal troubles over his controversial posts. Critics now accuse the EFCC of targeting him unfairly, raising concerns about freedom of expression and due process.
As public pressure mounts, the EFCC faces growing scrutiny over its handling of the case. Will the agency provide a clear explanation, or will VDM’s detention fuel further accusations of intimidation against government critics? The situation remains unresolved, leaving many to demand transparency from Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption body.
