“No Problem,” Says Villa Boss After Hasty Exit Following Heavy Defeat to Arsenal
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery dismissed the significance of a missed post-match handshake with Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta on Tuesday, chalking it up to a difference in routine after his side’s heavy 4-1 defeat.
The moment occurred after the final whistle at the Emirates Stadium, as Arteta remained on the touchline while Emery made a swift exit down the tunnel following the loss that ended Villa’s 11-game winning streak.
“After the match, always my routine is quick—shake hands and go with my coaches, with my players, or go to the dressing room,” Emery explained when asked about the quick departure. “I was waiting, and waiting. He was happy and he was with his coaches, and I decided to go inside. But for me, it’s not a problem.”
Arteta, whose team extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with the emphatic victory, also played down the incident. “That’s OK,” he said. “That’s part of the game, not an issue at all.”
For Emery, who managed Arsenal for 18 months before his dismissal in 2019, the focus remains on regrouping after a sobering defeat that leaves Villa six points adrift of the league leaders. His team will look to bounce back when they host Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
