Emotional Pogba Returns to Football After 19-Month Absence

The French star made his first competitive appearance in 19 months, calling it an emotional step on a “long way” back to the pitch.

In an emotional return after a 19-month doping ban, Paul Pogba made his first competitive appearance for Monaco on Saturday, admitting it “felt strange” to be back in the routine of professional football.

The 32-year-old midfielder came on as a second-half substitute in Monaco’s 4-1 Ligue 1 defeat to Rennes, marking his long-awaited return to the game after a period he described as a “long way” back.

“There were a lot of emotions. I was happy, but there’s a bit of sadness with the result,” a reflective Pogba told Ligue 1+. “We’re a bit gutted to have lost, but today was a step to take. I did it, and I’m happy about that.”

Pogba, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, acknowledged he is still building towards full match fitness. “I feel good; there’s been a lot of hard work,” he said. “I still need time to get fit and play 90 minutes. But that will come with time.”

He also spoke about the personal milestone of reintegrating into a squad, noting, “It felt strange at first to be back on the plane with the group. I’ve settled in well… We’re getting back into the right routine.”

When asked about the possibility of returning to the French national team for the next World Cup, Pogba remained grounded, calling the prospect “a bonus.” His immediate focus is on contributing to Monaco.

Monaco manager Sebastien Pocognoli has backed his new signing to be a success, highlighting the qualities Pogba retains. “[He will bring] experience and leadership, both on and off the pitch,” Pocognoli said, adding that Pogba “hasn’t lost his vision or his technique.”

For now, Pogba’s return, even in a losing effort, represents a significant personal victory after a challenging and lengthy absence from the sport.
