Enzo Maresca Emerges as Contender for Manchester United Managerial Vacancy

Former Chelsea Boss Open to Old Trafford Move Despite Similar Power Struggles, Reports Claim

Just days after his departure from Chelsea, former boss Enzo Maresca has reportedly expressed interest in the now-vacant managerial position at Manchester United, according to TEAMtalk.

The Italian, who left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent on January 1st, is said to be open to the challenge at Old Trafford, even after experiencing a strained relationship with the Chelsea hierarchy—a scenario that mirrors the breakdown that led to Ruben Amorim’s dismissal from United on Monday.

“Contact with his new agent, Jorge Mendes, has been established to sound out his interest in the job,” the report states, noting that Maresca would be willing to work under a similar leadership structure to the one he left at Chelsea.

The potential appointment is facilitated by a pre-existing relationship between Maresca and United CEO Omar Berrada from their shared time at Manchester City, where Berrada is said to have held the coach in high regard. In 2024, Chelsea reportedly moved quickly to hire Maresca out of fear that United might pursue him.

Despite this interest, United’s search is reported to be wide-ranging. Director of football Jason Wilcox, who led the process that resulted in Amorim’s exit, is not solely focused on Maresca. Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner remains the current favorite for the role, and the club is expected to conduct a thorough selection process rather than make a rushed appointment.

Maresca, who won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea, is also reportedly on the radar of Manchester City as a potential long-term successor to Pep Guardiola, as well as Italian giants Juventus.

For now, Darren Fletcher is in temporary charge at United as the club begins its latest search for a permanent manager, with Enzo Maresca unexpectedly positioning himself as a candidate in the early stages.
