United Manager Urges Winger to Compete for Position as Transfer Rumors Swirl
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has called on Jadon Sancho to fight for his place in the team, despite ongoing speculation about the winger’s future at Old Trafford. Sancho, who has been linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, traveled with the squad for their match against Brighton on Saturday but was ultimately not included on the bench.
Sancho, 24, returned to United last season after a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund but has struggled to secure a regular spot in Ten Hag’s lineup. Amid a shortage of options, the Dutch manager opted to bring Sancho along for the Brighton clash, emphasizing that the player needs to compete for his position.
“He’s here; it was a choice to make, we have had some issues,” Ten Hag told TNT Sports. “So we needed a full squad. He’s one of them, he has to compete for his position, and we’ll have a look. In the squad, it’s a long season.”
As the transfer deadline approaches, Ten Hag hinted at the possibility of further signings, though he stressed that any additions would need to be the right fit for the team. “We will see,” he added. “We always have to look, but it has to be the right option.”
In a separate discussion, Ten Hag praised young winger Alejandro Garnacho, who has quickly become a fan favorite at Old Trafford. The 20-year-old Argentine has made a strong impact, scoring 16 goals in 87 appearances and playing a key role in United’s recent successes, including their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
“He has high potential, 100 percent. He showed last season he can contribute, he can be a starting XI player,” Ten Hag said. However, the manager urged caution, noting that Garnacho still has a “long way to go” before reaching world-class status. “It starts with very hard work. That brought him where he is now, and that will bring him to that world-class player because he has the potential.”
Garnacho’s impressive performances, including a goal in the Community Shield and a crucial assist in United’s Premier League opener against Fulham, have highlighted his potential as one of United’s most exciting prospects. Ten Hag acknowledged the need for players with the “X factor” in his squad, but emphasized the importance of consistency.
“If you want to be that player where your colleague is talking about ‘world-class,’ then you have to do it consistently,” Ten Hag concluded.
