Erik ten Hag Frustrated as Manchester United Drop Points in Europa League Draw Against Twente

Manager laments missed opportunities and defensive lapses in 1-1 stalemate at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag expressed his disappointment after Manchester United let a lead slip in their 1-1 UEFA Europa League draw against Twente on Wednesday. Despite Christian Eriksen’s first-half thunderbolt putting United in front, a second-half mistake by the midfielder led to Sam Lammers’ equalizer for the Dutch side.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Ten Hag criticized his team for not capitalizing on their advantage and allowing Twente to stay in the game. “We kept them alive. One-nil up, controlling the game, you have to be consistent and keep going. In the second half, we dropped the level and gave a goal away,” he said. “We didn’t finish it off; we had to go for the second goal. They stayed alive, and we got punished with a mistake from ourselves.”

The equalizer, scored in the 68th minute, came after a defensive lapse, with Ten Hag emphasizing his frustration at the manner in which Twente were able to dribble through the pitch uncontested. “A player from Twente can dribble through the whole pitch without stopping. We can’t give a goal away like this,” the Dutch coach lamented.

The result left Twente fans celebrating a hard-earned point, while pundits like TNT Sports’ Owen Hargreaves pointed to United’s ongoing struggles to close out games this season.

With seven matches remaining in the newly expanded Europa League format, Ten Hag urged his team to find more consistency. United’s next test comes against Porto on October 3, followed by a clash with Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce later in the month.
