Dutch Manager Stays On Despite Speculation and Talks with Other Candidates
Erik ten Hag will continue as Manchester United’s manager following a thorough end-of-season review, despite intense speculation about his future and discussions with potential replacements.
In recent weeks, there were rumors that United’s owners, INEOS, were considering other managerial options, especially after United’s surprise 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final. However, talks with ten Hag on Tuesday confirmed that both parties prefer him to stay on.
The Athletic reports that ten Hag’s current contract, which runs until next June with an option to extend for another year, will likely be renegotiated. Although United finished eighth in the Premier League, their worst since the competition’s inception in 1992, the FA Cup victory has bolstered ten Hag’s position.
United’s review of the 2023/24 season and ten Hag’s individual performance concluded that he should remain in charge. In case a change was needed, United had approached several managers, including Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi, and Kieran McKenna.
The decision to keep ten Hag was influenced by United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford. The Daily Mail reports that United officials are keen to see how ten Hag performs under a new structure aimed at providing him with the best chance to succeed.
This new structure will include Omar Berrada arriving from Manchester City as chief executive on July 13, Jason Wilcox already joining as technical director, and Dan Ashworth expected to move from Newcastle as sporting director.
Speaking after the FA Cup win, ten Hag defended his record, stating, “Two trophies in two years is not bad, three finals in two years is not bad. If they don’t want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do.”
With ten Hag staying on, United fans will hope for an improved performance in the upcoming season.
