Erik ten Hag Turns Down Ajax Return, Eyes New Challenge

Former Manchester United Manager Rejects Reunion with Dutch Giants Amid “Other Plans”

Erik ten Hag has rejected a potential return to Ajax, opting to pursue other opportunities instead, according to Dutch media reports. The 55-year-old, who has been without a club since leaving Manchester United in November, was a top candidate for Ajax after Francesco Farioli’s sudden departure earlier this week.

Farioli, who spent just one season in Amsterdam, stepped down citing “disagreements” with the club’s board, leaving Ajax scrambling for a replacement. The Dutch giants quickly drew up a shortlist that included Go Ahead Eagles boss Paul Simonis and Ten Hag, their former manager who led them to three Eredivisie titles and a memorable Champions League semi-final run in 2019.

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes confirmed he had spoken with Ten Hag following Sunday’s 2-0 win over FC Twente but remained tight-lipped about the coach’s interest in a comeback. However, Voetbal International reported on Thursday that Ten Hag has decided against a reunion, preferring to explore “other plans.”

Though currently unattached, the Dutchman is not short of suitors. Reports suggest Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen could be among the clubs monitoring his situation.

For now, Ajax must continue their search elsewhere, while Ten Hag appears set for a fresh challenge—one that won’t see him return to the club where he once cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most respected managers.
