City Extend Unbeaten Champions League Streak to 26 Matches
Erling Haaland starred with a stunning second-half double as Manchester City cruised to a dominant 5-0 victory over Sparta Prague in the UEFA Champions League. Phil Foden opened the scoring in the first half, but City hit full stride after the break, with goals from Haaland, John Stones, and a late penalty from Matheus Nunes sealing an emphatic win.
Despite City’s first-half dominance, manager Pep Guardiola was visibly frustrated as his side had only Foden’s opener to show for their efforts. However, Haaland ignited the second-half surge, scoring his first with a spectacular acrobatic finish. Moments later, he added a second goal to cap off a brilliant team move, making it 3-0. John Stones then headed home City’s fourth goal, before Nunes, who had been fouled in the box, coolly dispatched a penalty to complete the rout.
City’s victory extended their unbeaten run in the Champions League to a record 26 matches, surpassing Manchester United’s previous record of 25 games without defeat. The win leaves City third in their group, with seven points from three games, trailing Liverpool and Aston Villa. City now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they will face Southampton at the weekend.
Sparta Prague, Czech champions, struggled to contain City’s relentless attack, with the home side enjoying 80% possession. Goalkeeper Peter Vindahl made several impressive saves but couldn’t prevent the flood of goals once Haaland found his form.
