17-Year-Old Starlet Poised to Step Up in Bukayo Saka’s Absence
Ethan Nwaneri’s standout performance in Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Brentford has reignited hopes for the club’s Hale End academy talents, with the 17-year-old earning praise for his impressive display on the right flank.
As Arsenal continues their unbeaten streak against fellow London clubs, goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino, and Gabriel Martinelli secured the Gunners’ climb to second place in the Premier League. With Bukayo Saka sidelined for an extended period following hamstring surgery, speculation about Arsenal entering the transfer market has swirled. However, manager Mikel Arteta may already have his solution in Nwaneri.
The teenager, who made his record-breaking Premier League debut at Brentford in 2022 at just 15, was handed his first league start on the same pitch. Nwaneri delivered an assured performance, creating two chances and completing 92% of his passes, showcasing his potential to fill Saka’s void.
“He just makes me smile,” said former England international Karen Carney during TNT Sports coverage. “He’s brave, he’s bold, and for someone so young, he’s a joy to watch.”
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown also praised Nwaneri, highlighting the club’s continued success in developing homegrown talent. “For a young man, he was outstanding,” Keown said. “He’s positive, and there’s a whole lot more to come. With Saka unavailable, he’ll definitely get more chances.”
Keown also pointed to other academy prospects like Myles Lewis-Skelly, emphasizing the importance of integrating youth players into the squad.
Arteta, visibly pleased with Nwaneri’s performance, confirmed that the decision to play the teenager was well-earned. “In training, he gives us all the right reasons [to play him],” Arteta told TNT Sports. “We could’ve signed a player from any country, but he deserves to play because he’s earned it.”
With Saka’s absence creating opportunities, Nwaneri’s maturity and talent could play a pivotal role in Arsenal’s bid to stay competitive at the top of the Premier League.
