Spanish police identify individual accused of making monkey gestures and sounds following the star’s goal against Real Oviedo.
Spanish police have made an arrest following an alleged racist incident directed at Kylian Mbappé during Real Madrid’s 3–0 victory over Real Oviedo last month. The supporter is accused of making monkey noises and gestures moments after the French forward scored the opening goal.
The incident occurred on August 24 at Oviedo’s Estadio Carlos Tartiere. After a detailed review of broadcast footage, authorities identified the individual, who was later detained and questioned. The case has now been forwarded to hate crime prosecutors.
LaLiga, which reported the abuse after the match, continues to strengthen its efforts to combat racism in Spanish football. This arrest is the latest in a series of actions taken since the high-profile abuse aimed at Vinícius Júnior in 2023, which resulted in multiple prison sentences.
If convicted, the accused fan could face severe penalties, including a prison sentence of up to three years, a substantial fine ranging from €60,000 to €650,000, and a ban from attending future matches.
LaLiga has increasingly worked with law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable, signaling a firm stance against discrimination in football stadiums. Earlier this month, an Espanyol fan was convicted of a hate crime for racially abusing Athletic Club’s Iñaki Williams in a landmark case initially reported by the league.
The response highlights a growing commitment from Spanish football authorities to protect players and pursue justice for acts of racism.
